São Marcos da Serra, a beautiful authentic and traditional parish in the center of the Algarve , in the south of Portugal.
São Marcos da Serra is located in the north of the municipality of Silves, with a population of 1,366 inhabitants (2011 census), in an area of 154.9 ksqm.
The parish is located between Serra de Monchique and Serra do Caldeirão (GPS 37.21 North and 8.22 West).
To the north it borders the province of Alentejo, and to the south it is about 30 km from the Algarve coast .
The patron saint of the village is São Marcos, the writer of the oldest and shortest gospel in the Bible.
The village of São Marcos da Serra, with its whitewashed houses and narrow, steep streets , is a typical Algarve mountain village. The village has several gardens, where you can enjoy beautiful views of the mountains. The Ribeira de Odelouca curves around the village and ends at the Odelouca dam.
As you walk through the village, one of the first things you will notice is the noria and the donkey. These types of wells are still quite common on earth, although there are currently no donkeys that work with this mechanism. The noria was introduced here by the Moors, who were experts in crop irrigation.
The Mother Church stands proudly at the top of São Marcos da Serra and dates back to the beginning of the 17th century.
