Portimão was a prehistoric settlement, Phoenician trading post. Greek and Carthaginian.
With the Romans it became very well known due to its excellent port, it was conquered from the Muslims in 1290 by the Knights of the Order of Santiago, in 1453 it was elevated to a village, being called Vila Nova de Portimão and in 1924 elevated to a city.
