In the second half of the twentieth century, Quarteira began to grow and enjoy its huge beach with an increasing number of visiting tourists, as well as many people who buy holiday homes in the area. This growth continued and, in 1999, Quarteira became recognized as a city.
Quarteira has grown considerably in recent decades, and the fishing village has given way to a tourist resort with many hotels and apartments.
