In Silves there is a lot to discover. One of them is the Old Bridge over the Arade River, which today has only pedestrian access. Despite its name, the old viaduct is probably of medieval origin. Silves Castle, built between the 9th and 12th century, is not only the emblematic monument of the city, but one of the most important buildings of the Arab occupation times in the whole Algarve. Its walls and battlements are built with red sandstone from Silves. Already in 1910, Silves Castle was classified as a National Monument. From the top of the walls there is a no less imposing view over the upper part of the city, over the cathedral, downtown Silves by the Arade river and the green hills on the outskirts of Silves.
